Here’s an updated list of ideas for signs for the upcoming March 28th “No Kings” protests! The best signs tell people what we stand for and do it simply. Our goals are to show our numbers and our power, to generate images that portray us as the “good guys” to those who might not read the news, and to deny the opposition images they desperately seek to justify the use of excessive force.

We protest because we strenuously object to the illegal and unconstitutional actions of this administration, but we should try our best to frame our messaging in terms of what we are FOR instead of what we are against. It is more effective persuasion and it is safer for you as a protester.
Protest Strategy: Managing the Optics
The American public will judge who is right and wrong based almost exclusively on the images they see. People thought the L.A. protests were violent because those are the images that get used and shared. We have to be super strategic about stage-managing the optics, both on the ground and in our messaging.

I need to work on my sign this week. I’m an old artist and I’m using up old damaged mat board for my signs. But I’ve found that foam core is really nice to use as I can cut a handhold into it very easily. Aim for high contrast: black on white, black on yellow or some other light color as your base. Cardboard is cheap and a coat of white acrylic paint or gesso (if you have it) will toughen it up a bit. Make your message short and letters at least three inches high, if you can so those passing in vehicles can read them in a flash. Or just use an image of something we don’t want blown up really big with a big red circle with a slash through it over top. I also try to make my signs two-sided so I can rest it on my head and it can be read if I’m coming or going. I also really like the sign-board style with a sign hanging from my front and my back and my hands are free (also blocks the cold wind some).
